DRRM Reflection

The UST NSTP DISASTER RISK REDUCTION MANAGEMENT SEMINAR was held last October. Many students, including myself, attended the said seminar. It is a workshop, training, and practical seminar. It aimed to give the students knowledge on how to prepare for upcoming or unexpected events that could turn into a disaster.

Now in the first part of the seminar, we were given a lecture about what is a disaster, how can we act when it such things happen, and to can we prepare for it.

The students are taught concepts that are important to disaster risk reduction. In a very short time of our discussion, I can say that we have learned sufficiently and no we could briefly discuss those concepts.

First is Disaster, it is just a natural event but when it becomes catastrophic or it harms and endangers the lives of the people, it therefore qualifies as a disaster. Then there are hazards, it is like threats that makes the people know about a certain disaster and then avoid it. Another one is what we call risks, it is when we can be endangered by a disaster by not knowing that there are factors that can affect us and be prone to the danger brought by a disaster. Vulnerability, is the weakness of an individual or community, these weaknesses should be noticed and people should take action to prevent disasters from happening.

The seminar did not stop just yet, for we had fun and enjoying activities after the lecture. We had a game called "Bahay-Tao-Bagyo". All of the students seemed to enjoy the game, this keep the seminar lively and the students participative.

The next part, First aid and Basic life support. At this part, we were given the knowledge on how to properly address one that is in need or hurt, then apply the correct actions with the right and careful procedures.

We also conducted PCVA, where each of the members shared the needed info to complete the activity. We completed most of it except that everyone does not no a single local knowledge listing. After completing the PCVA, each group presented their work. I realized that it is through other people that we are able to know and will know, things that would keep us safe, like what we have done here. In the national perspective of this, the Philippines often have a disaster because the people are not prepared. We should unite and help each other to prevent these disaster and also be there for each other when it happens.

I had interviewed the barangay chairman in our community, zone 50 brgy. 511. Mr. Arnold B. Ginete, who won awards such as most outstanding barangay and most cleanest barangay, discussed the plans they have in case of an emergency when a calamity hits their area. They have food supplies and shelters near the barangay where the people may stay. But of course prevention should still be the primary concern. He said most of the people in the barangay were aware of what to do in time of calamity, other barangay offcials are well oriented and ready to help for the safety of the people.

For me, what I think I can do as a Filipino to address the vulnerabilities of my community is to get involved, speak with the leaders of the community and give them suggestions on how will they help keep our community safe. NOW is the best time to address a Disaster Risk Reduction Management, for a calamity may occur anytime. And I think everyone should get involved for it would be easier and no one would be left behind.
